Nordic kicks off 2017 Community Giveback Week

With the amount of good fortune we’ve experienced at Nordic over the past seven years, we recognize the importance of giving back and investing in the future of the communities in which we live and work. With that in mind, Winnie Karanja, founder and executive director of Maydm, was a great choice to address the home office in Madison and kick off Nordic’s fifth annual Community Giveback Week.

As the demand for STEM jobs increases, women and many minorities are underrepresented in science and engineering careers. In addition, only 10 percent of K-12 schools are currently teaching computer science classes. Maydm is working to level the playing field with a focus on equipping girls and students of color with the technical skills and experiences to become innovators and technology leaders.

Maydm, a play on the phrase “made by them,” offers a number of programs for students in Dane County to gain the skills and experience to succeed in the technology sector. Winnie discussed the importance of demystifying technology jobs by offering students the opportunity to witness first hand the people and the offices of Madison’s growing technology companies for a tangible, achievable vision of a career in technology.

While Nordic’s Giveback initiative started with one day in one city, it’s spread to include 11 organizations in seven cities across the nation. This year over 150 team members will give nearly 400 hours of their time.

We’ll be volunteering all week long. Here are the cities and organizations where we’ll be serving:
